Is the Lord Calling You to be a Catechist or PREP Small Group Leader?
Each year, the PREP office invites parishioners to discern if God is calling them to help in the religious education and faith formation of our children. Through our Baptism we are called to respond to the Great Commission: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Mt. 28:19-20). Perhaps you are unsure about what to expect or what to do or maybe you are worried that you do not know enough about your faith to share it.
Regardless, the PREP office is looking for moms, dads, grandparents, retirees, teachers, students, first-time catechists, and returning catechists. We are looking for parishioners willing to learn more about the Faith and are committed to helping our children encounter Jesus Christ, live as his disciples, and who trust that God will provide what they need to be an effective catechist.
Here are a few answers to some of the most common reasons why people are hesitant to join this ministry. We hope these answers help with your decision to join our team of catechists.
I do not know what to teach or even how to teach.
We provide a week-by-week curriculum outline and a full set of resources to help you. We will provide training and guidance. In addition, the books and catechist guides have complete catechist resources, lesson plans, and a website loaded with additional tips and resources. Our experienced catechists will also share ideas and lesson plans with you as well. The PREP office staff is always available to help you and answer any questions that you may have throughout the year.
I do not know my faith well enough.
At some point in our lives, we all learned something new. How to read, how to tie our shoes, how to solve basic math formulas and we all learned it well. The same holds true with your faith. When you teach about your faith you will naturally learn more about it and as a result, your faith will grow as well.
I am not comfortable teaching by myself.
The good news is that you do not have to. You could start as an assistant catechist. Some catechists like to team-teach. Others like to trade off from week to week. You could also be a substitute catechist if you like to travel or if your availability is limited.
I am worried I’ll be a “parent” rather than a “teacher” in my child’s class.
You may lead a grade or class that is different than your child’s. Some of our catechists like teaching their child’s class and move up as their child progresses through the program. Others like teaching a different grade level that their child is not in.
What if someone asks me a question that I do not know the answer to?
You do not have to know all the answers all the time. We have the people and the resources to help you find the answer so you can bring the correct answer to the next class.
I will not be able to manage a room of 15 kids.
Very few of our catechists are professional teachers, so everyone has concerns about classroom management, especially when first joining this ministry. We will guide you in setting expectations for your classroom and teach you about effective classroom management techniques.
If you have any questions or would like more information about becoming a catechist, please contact the PREP Office or Deacon John Inzeo at 914-961-1076 or email [email protected].
John was born in the Bronx, and he moved to New Rochelle at the age of six. He attended Iona Grammar School, Iona Preparatory School, and Iona College - a true Iona Gael! Shortly after graduating college, John met his amazing wife, Dana. They have two children, Ryan and Jason. Both sons have graduated college and have begun their own lives as young adults.
John’s path to ministry and service to the Church started when he was in the sixth grade. He felt a possible calling to enter religious life, but he did not immediately follow it. In 1993, John became a police officer for the City of New Rochelle. But the Lord’s call never left him, even throughout his career in law enforcement. After retiring as a Sergeant, the Lord’s call returned loud and clear. John became a catechist, entering a ministry he truly enjoyed. In time, he became the Director of Religious Education and Faith Formation at the Parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help - St. Catharine in Pelham Manor.
He recently received a master’s degree in theology from St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers. After 5 years of formation, he was ordained a permanent deacon for the Archdiocese of New York, joining the clergy on Saturday, June 15. John also currently serves as a volunteer for United Hospice of Rockland.
Now, John will be the Director of Religious Education at ICA Parish. He is thrilled to join our Parish and looks forward to serving the parishioners, catechists, staff, parents, and students, along with the priests and deacons already ministering here.
On your behalf, Fr. Sorgie welcomes John to our wonderful community of Tuckahoe and Eastchester and wishes him years of fruitful ministry with our children.
